Following the Science of Reading and Structured Literacy, courses in the Orton-Gillingham Approach cover the WHY and HOW of teaching reading skills. Our courses include:

INTRODUCTORY

In the Introductory course, participants will learn the OG approach to teach beginning reading. This includes phonemic awareness, phonics and spelling of single-syllable words, and an embedded practicum component.

INTERMEDIATE

In the Intermediate course, participants will learn the OG approach to teach multisyllabic words. With an embedded practicum component, this course includes phonemic and morphological awareness, advanced phonics, morphological word work which enhances vocabulary, and comprehension improvement.

ADVANCED

In the Advanced course, participants will learn the OG strategies to close the higher level linguistic skills required by older or more advanced learners in multisyllabic words. With an embedded practicum component, this course includes writing, vocabulary development, comprehension, and analyzing formal assessment.

EARLY LEARNERS

In the Early Learners course, participants learn the foundational reading support skills needed to effectively teach pre-kindergartners prerequisite literacy skills. Instruction focuses on phonemic awareness, letter knowledge, concepts of print, alphabetic code, phonics, and more.

EXTENDED PRACTICUM

During the Extended Practicum, participants work directly with an instructor mentor to receive individually specialized instruction based on the participant’s teaching practice.

IMSLEC ACCREDITATION

IMSLEC – Accreditation

The mission of The International Multisensory Structured Language Education Council (IMSLEC) is to accredit quality training courses for the professional preparation of multisensory structured language education specialists. Orton-Gillingham of MN is accredited by IMSLEC at the Teacher and Instructor-of-Teachers levels. Accredited organizations, in turn, determine which applicants can be certified individually. Member organizations approved by IMSLEC have been pre-approved for membership in the IDA Alliance.

IMSLEC Certification Pathway

Orton-Gillingham of Minnesota (OGMN) has been restructuring its curriculum to better meet the needs of participants/teachers and expedite the track for certification.  In January 2018, Orton-Gillingham of Minnesota (OGMN) completed the reaffirmation process with the International Multisensory Structured Language Education Council (IMSLEC).  To ensure participants can meet the timeline regarding IMSLEC requirements for certification, OGMN has changed the Certification Pathway.
